Love and Justice

"Dad! I can see the fire from the sword already!"

"I know son. In a few moments, you'll be able to see everything we lost, as well."

"Dad, why are we not allowed in there anymore?"

"Because, Cain, we disobeyed our Creator. Your mother and I doubted His perfect goodness for one horrible moment and gave in to our lack of faith. Yet, while we are no longer allowed in that beautiful garden, our Maker still wants and expects the best of us. He still wants to talk with us and walk with us and be worshiped by us. We deserved to die that day, because the penalty for every sin must be bloodshed, but He took mercy on us and killed an animal instead. A senseless death for a senseless sin. Do not underestimate His love for you, my son, nor His justice. His love is without condition, but His justice demands anything beyond our capabilities."

"What do you mean, Dad?"

"I mean, He will love you no matter what you do or who you are, but He cannot accept your mistakes or your own efforts to correct those mistakes. Only the shedding of blood can cover our sin. You will remember that, won't you, Cain?"

"Yes, father. I will remember."
